Kindergarten and 1st Grade Analyze Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night

As a class, we will look at lines, shapes, and objects in the Starry Night.  In the second class, we will use paper mache to make the painting 3-D.  3-D is something we have been reviewing with K.  They made the 3-D sculptures and 2-D house collages.  These paintings will use a different art material, paper mache, and look at Starry Night to analyze what van Gogh used for key details in it.

Water Is liquid to solid or Solid to Liquid

2nd graders will draw cards to show what their stories as water are like.  They will be rain, snow, sleet, hail or a puddle and tell and draw a story about their type of water.  They will tell a partner a story about changing from liquid to solid or solid to liquid.  They will complete a landscape with their two forms of water in it.

3rd Graders Will Draw the Water Cycle

This lesson has a connection to South Carolina Science standards.  To generate a variety of ideas, the students will draw water on a landscape different from his partner.  We will categorize the final drawings in the class, and see the different solutions we came up with.

Pie Graphs of How 4th and 5th Graders Spend Time

As the Staying On-Course videos are completed, we will start a new project showing how we spend our time in a day.  This reviews pie graphs that both 4th and 5th graders use with fractions showing percent in math.

Painting like Jonathan Green

We spent 3 classes talking about key details and the main idea in Jonathan Green's paintings.  Jonathan Green was born in Beaufort; he is a SC artist.  We learned about him and his style of painting.  He like color contrast, painting people he knows, the background is near water, no faces on people or hats covering faces.

2nd and 3rd grade Andy Warhol Prints

We had finished painting like Jonathan Green.  We look at Andy Warhol's prints of Marilyn Monroe.  Since this is the first printmaking in about 2 years, we look at how prints are different from paintings.  We started drawing self-portraits to trace for monoprints.  We will print at least 4 to 6 prints.

3rd Grade Art Club-Diego Rivera Murals

We looked at Diego Rivera murals and identified key details.  We worked with partners or 3 in a group.  the students used fabric, marker, and other materials.  This was fun!

Academic Arts Academy Night

Last night, 4th and 5th graders and their parents were invited to come see what we really do in Academic Arts.  They rotated from library, art, science lab, music, and P.E.  Each station was 10 minutes.  I asked the art students to teach their parents how to make a Wordle or a Flipboom.  We practiced ahead of time this week.  We had about 30 of the 80 students come; many students are involved in spring sports now.
