2nd Grade Mall Map for Black History Celebration

When 2nd grade presented their learning and posters about Black History famous people, I created a "Mall Map" complete with a "You are Here" sign.  The students presented information about their famous person on that night.

2 or 3-D shapes for Kindergarten

We have been reviewing shapes and drawing objects in the room, hallway, and art room using "hidden shapes."  To build on these drawings using shapes, we will use shapes to collage houses.  To continue the learning about shapes, we will make 3-D sculptures that have folded or curled paper.  We will review 3-d shapes or forms and name objects in the room that have form.  This should be an interesting unit of study.  It is in collaboration with the Math Standards the students are learning in their class.

Staying On-Course Videos for 4th and 5th Grade Classes

Last year I created a video about respect to review with the students.  This year I would like the students to create a class video.  They will take photos or video of each student explaining what respect in art looks like.  They will work in groups and write the script, or subtitles in Powerpoint, there will be one group that completes the editing of the video.  I can't wait to see what the students come up with.  This week I will ask Narrator and Director for each class to edit and complete video as much as possible.  When the class is over, I will complete the video with student directions.

Plant Printmaking

With the 1st graders, we will look at Audubon's illustrations of birds that include plants.  We will trace and draw our own plants using lines and shapes.  The next class we will identify shapes and forms to model plants in clay.  After modeling plants we will videotape student explaining the shapes and forms they used to create his plant.  Later we will learn about printmaking.  Each student will create and change the print made 3 times.  The last class we will draw a monoprint of a plant using shapes and forms.  This will coordinate with the Science unit the students are learning about.  As an artist the student will know that artist's illustrate informational, or reference books also.  They will also experience printmaking and change each print.

1st Grade Family Trees

We studied trees to draw using lines, and shapes.  We drew and painted trees for family trees.  The next step is added family members to the trees.  The last step is drawing a symbol for each family member to show more about the person than their name.  This is Practical Thinking, because students will need to know how to draw using lines and shapes, but also any landscape has trees.

Eric Carle-like Collage Animals

We painted using texture, lines and dots.  We mixed the colors to create new ones.  After everything had dried, we collaged animals using shapes.

PK Glue resist line drawing & Color Contrast

We combined to different materials with learning about color contrast.  The students drew at least 3 different lines to review lines.  Then they drew the lines in glue on black paper.  Later we discussed color contrast and colors that are "holding hands" similar like red and orange.  We also compared fighting colors like red and green.  This was a fun project.
